TRIDENT LAYERS SWEET CHERRY + ISLAND LIME

There’s this TOUGHNESS that takes over eventually with the Trident Layers gum(s) that ends up ruining what could otherwise be quite all right. These flavor combos are generally good (save, maybe, strawberry & citrus… ehhhh), and this latest one is MAYBE, just maybe, the best yet! Half-kudos, Trident Layers!

What works best about this is that it’s in nooooo way over the top, which for fruit gum is quite a change of (awesome) pace. Cherry can be such an off-putting flavor because it’s usually SO sweet and SO BIGGGG, and here it’s muted and more enjoyable. I’m not sure just what “island” adds to “lime” flavor, but it mixes so well with the cherry that I don’ttttt care at all!

The look of Trident Layers is so pleasing too! Each piece is like a little gum sandwich, isn’t it? I think the Cool Mint+Melon Fresco has a great green/blue look, and this Cherry+Lime flavor is pink and green! Fun! The packaging with these is totally top notch as well. I love that the pack has that clean, matte finish to it and it opens up in the double-decker style (it also, incidentally, LOCKS quite well… which will come into play in a later review of the UP2U line…).

After about 20 minutes, though, these pieces of gum get sooooo TOUGH in your mouth that it ends up ruining the loveliness. With this particular flavor, I end up hitting a wall and thinking it’s totally gross and spitting it out. That’s a bummer for a flavor that starts out so strong. What gives, Trident???

Flavor Strength: 8
Comments: A little fruit punch-y/non-descript fruit-y, but also pretty tasy!

Flavor Endurance: 7
Comments: Flavor, sure, but what about TEXTURE…

Final thought: Come to think of it, I sort of find all Trident gum a little tough. Those original size little sticks are always sort of a HARD chew, and the Vitality gums are just unsatisfying… WHO DISAGREES?
